- Desk nooks and home office built-ins
Why Site-Built
Fits Better
Store-bought units are built for square rooms. Most Maine homes are not.
Old Rooms Are Not Square
We scribe every built-in to the walls, floor and ceiling it meets. No gaps, no filler strips, no caulk doing the job the carpentry should.
Matching Existing Profiles
New built-ins should carry the same casing and base as the room. We match or mill the profile so the piece looks original to the house.
Paint Grade Or Stain Grade
Poplar and MDF for a painted finish, white oak, maple or pine for stain or clear. We will tell you which makes sense for the budget and the look.
Storage For Maine Winters
Mudrooms earn their keep here. Benches, cubbies, hooks and closed storage for boots, coats and gear, built to the family that uses it.

What Custom Built-Ins Cost
A single painted bookcase and a full wall of stained white oak cabinetry are very different projects. These are the factors that set the price.
- Size and amount of shelving
- Paint grade vs stain grade material
- Doors, drawers and hardware
- Lighting and outlets
- Existing trim to match
- Finish: painted on site, sprayed in shop, or clear coat

Common Questions
About Custom Carpentry and Built-Ins
How much does a built-in bookcase cost?
A painted, site-built bookcase with adjustable shelving typically runs in the low thousands and goes up with width, doors and drawers, lighting and a stain-grade material like white oak. We price it as line items so you can see what each choice adds. A photo of the wall and rough dimensions is enough for a ballpark.
Can you build around radiators and existing trim?
Yes. Built-ins in older Greater Portland homes almost always have to work around a radiator, a window or original trim. We design the piece to incorporate them cleanly rather than cover them up.
How long does a mudroom build take?
Most mudroom built-ins are installed in two to four days on site once the materials are ready. Larger entries with closed cabinets and a bench take longer. Painting adds a few days for drying between coats.
Do you do slat walls and feature walls?
Yes. White oak slat walls, paneled accent walls and board and batten are regular work for us, including condos in Portland where the wall is the whole design statement.
Paint grade or stain grade?
Paint grade (poplar, MDF) costs less and gives a clean, uniform finish. Stain grade (white oak, maple, pine) shows the wood and costs more. We will show you samples and price both if you are deciding.
Do you work in Portland condos?
Yes. We plan for parking, elevator access, building hours and association rules, and we keep the work tidy in a shared building.
